At the driving range and on the golf course I battle with hitting the ball fat. Doing so robs me of distance. I have to wipe dirt off my clubhead after nearly every swing. But man when I hit it right those balls just fly. Nice.
I put a tee in the ground in line with the ball to see where my divot starts. When hitting fat (60%-70% of my shots especiallly with shorter irons) the divot can start anywhere up to 3" behind the ball. It can look like a farmer started plowing the fields when I am done with a range session.
I suspect it is a combination of things with probably the biggest contributor being inconsistent ball positioning/stance. What if I took my practice swing and then put the ball down at the beginning of the fluff without moving my feet, etc? That would be a good preshot routine I think. I should get a stick and put it between my feet to make sure my stance is the same width and the ball is in the sameish position.
I had several nice shots with the driver. No idea the distance but they looked farther than this morning on the course.
Spent 5-10 minutes putting. I worked from 12' on in. I think I made one and lipped several but the first putts were reasonably close and many of the 3rd were close also :)
