First round

Got my first round in a week earlier than the last two years. March 10th isn't bad. Today was a bit breezy but nearly 60* out. The boys and I went to Legends after soccer and lunch.

We started with a medium bucket of balls to warm up plus drinks and snacks. Oh yeah, we stopped at the golf store and bought G a longer driver. He is somewhere in between the old club and the new. He'll get there. N is still playing with the club we borrowed from the course last season.

We hit off matts and in front of them. The range was surprisingly busy. The boys did well. I focused on the 5W and 5H. The 5H is a Wishon with a high launch shaft that seemed to do the trick, though it was too windy to really want high launch today. I did work on weakening my grip a bit more to fight the lefts. There was enough success to warrant trying that a bit more on the driving range.

The boys and I decided not to count penalty strokes on the first round of the year. Sound logic.

I turned in a 35 without counting penalties. N played all holes and turned in a 45. G played many holes and parts of others (skipping only 2 or 3 completely) and turned in a 61. It was a good day. The course had people but not many so we could practice our course rules and etiquette.

Putting was good but the greens were sllllooooowwww. There was goose poop and goose damage on the greens. What do you expect for the first week in March? I missed 1 put by an inch. I left it hanging on the lip. I hope the putting in my office pays off.

In a way it was as if the season never ended. I picked up where I left off. I did hit the 3W off the tee on holes 4 and 7. On 4 I thought for sure I caught the hill with a good bounce to go 180-200 but I found it stuck in the grass at about 160 yards. Would have been a great shot in the summer. Hole 7 I used a 7i on my second shot and that proved to be too much club. A 9i would have been better. I did almost make it across the water on 7 with the 3W and the wind at my back.

I tried my 5H on hold 6. That one baffles me. Straight shots baffle me. I hit a couple of beautiful shots in a straight line to the right. What am I thinking there?

Oddly enough I did not pull out the driver or the 5W. There just aren't enough holes.

Got the boys home in time to change and go watch tennis on campus.
